Adonia försöker ta makten
1-2När kung David var gammal var han frusen av sig och blev inte varm hur många filtar man än bredde över honom.
3-4Man sökte över hela landet för att få tag i en ung, vacker och lämplig flicka, och slutligen fann man Abisag från Sunem, som fördes till kungen. Hon var mycket vacker, och hon tog hand om kungen och passade upp på honom, men kungen hade inget intimt umgänge med henne.
5Samtidigt lät Davids son Adonia, vars mor hette Haggit, att utropa sig till kung i stället för sin åldrige far. Han skaffade sig vagnar och ryttare och femtio män att springa före vagnen.
6Hans far hade aldrig velat gå till rätta med honom och fråga vad han menade med detta. Adonia såg mycket bra ut, och han var Absaloms yngre bror.
7Han fick med sig Joab, överbefälhavaren, och prästen Ebjatar, och de lovade att hjälpa honom till makten.
8Men bland dem som fortsatte att vara trogna mot kung David och vägrade acceptera Adonia fanns prästen Sadok och Benaja, Jojadas son, profeten Natan, Simei, Rei och Davids hjältar.
9Adonia begav sig till Rogelskällan, där han offrade får, tjurar och gödkalvar vid Soheletstenen. Därefter kallade han samman alla sina bröder, kungens söner och alla de män i Juda som var i kungens tjänst.
10Men han inbjöd inte profeten Natan, Benaja, Davids hjältar och sin bror Salomo.
11Då gick profeten Natan till Salomos mor, Bat-Seba, och frågade henne: Känner du till att Haggits son Adonia nu är kung och att vår herre David inte ens vet om det?
12Om du vill rädda ditt eget och din son Salomos liv, så ska du göra det jag säger till dig!
13Du ska genast gå till kung David och fråga honom: 'Min herre, har du inte lovat mig att min son Salomo ska bli kung efter dig och sitta på din tron? Hur kan det då komma sig att Adonia regerar nu?'
14Medan du talar med honom ska jag komma in och bekräfta allt du säger.
15Bat-Seba gick till den gamle kungen i hans rum där Abisag skötte om honom.
16Bat-Seba bugade sig djupt för honom och böjde knä. David frågade henne: Vad har du på hjärtat?
17Min herre och kung, svarade hon. Du svor inför Herren, din Gud, och lovade mig att min son Salomo skulle efterträda dig på tronen,
18men nu har Adonia blivit kung i stället utan att du ens vet om det!
19Han har firat sin kröning genom att offra oxar, gödkalvar och en mängd får, och han har inbjudit alla dina söner och prästen Ebjatar och Joab, överbefälhavaren, men inte Salomo.
20Nu vill hela Israel veta om du verkligen har utsett Adonia till din efterträdare.
21Om du inte gör någonting åt detta så kommer min son Salomo och jag att avrättas som brottslingar så snart du är borta.
22-23Medan hon fortfarande talade med kungen kom profeten Natan. Man meddelade kungen detta och han lät honom komma in i rummet. Natan bugade sig djupt för kungen
24och frågade: Herre, har du utsett Adonia att bli kung efter dig?
25I dag firar han sin kröning genom att offra tjurar, gödkalvar och får, och han har inbjudit dina söner till festligheterna, prästen Ebjatar och dina bästa män. De äter och dricker tillsammans med honom och ropar: 'Länge leve kung Adonia!'
26Men prästen Sadok och Benaja och Salomo och mig har han inte bjudit.
27Har detta skett med din vetskap? Man kan ju tro det, eftersom du inte har sagt ett ord om vilken av dina söner som du har valt att bli kung efter dig.
David väljer Salomo till tronföljare
28Kalla tillbaka Bat-Seba! sa David.Bat-Seba kom omedelbart och gick fram till kungen igen.
29Kung David gav då ett löfte under ed: Så sant Herren lever, han som har räddat mig från alla faror,
30lovar jag att din son Salomo ska bli kung och sitta på min tron, precis som jag tidigare sagt under ed inför Herren, Israels Gud.
31Då bugade sig Bat-Seba djupt inför honom och utropade: Tack, min herre och kung. Må du leva i evighet!
32Kalla hit prästen Sadok, profeten Natan och Benaja, Jojadas son, befallde kungen.När de kom,
33sa han till dem: Ta med er mina män och för Salomo till Gihon. Han ska rida på min egen mulåsna.
34I Gihon ska du Sadok och du Natan smörja honom till kung över Israel. Sedan ska ni blåsa i trumpeterna och ropa: 'Länge leve kung Salomo!'
35För honom sedan tillbaka hit och sätt honom på min tron som den nye kungen, för jag har utsett honom att härska över Israel och Juda.
36Amen! Må det bli så! svarade Benaja och tillade:
37Herren ska vara med Salomo, på samma sätt som han har varit med dig, och hans rike ska bli ännu mäktigare än ditt!
38Prästen Sadok, profeten Natan och Benaja med kung Davids livvakt tog alltså med sig Salomo till Gihon, och han red på kung Davids egen mulåsna.
39Sadok tog hornet med helig olja från tabernaklet och hällde över Salomo. Man blåste i trumpet, och allt folket ropade: Länge leve kung Salomo!
40Sedan återvände de alla till Jerusalem under musik och jubelrop så att marken skakade.
41Adonia och hans gäster hörde också all uppståndelse, just som de skulle avsluta sin fest.Vad är det som pågår? Varför är hela staden i uppror? frågade Joab när han hörde trumpetsignalerna.
42Innan han hunnit säga mer kom prästen Ebjatars son Jonatan inrusande.Kom hit, sa Adonia. En man som du kommer säkert med goda nyheter.
43Nej, tyvärr inte, ropade Jonatan. David har utropat Salomo till kung!
44-45Han har sänt honom till Gihon tillsammans med prästen Sadok och profeten Natan och Benaja, under beskydd av kungens egen livvakt, och Salomo red på kungens egen mulåsna. Sadok och Natan har smort honom till kung där! Nu har de just kommit tillbaka, och hela staden firar det. Det är därför det är ett sådant oväsen.
46-47Salomo sitter redan på tronen, och de styrande gratulerar David och säger: 'Gud ska välsigna dig mer genom Salomo än han har välsignat dig personligen! Ja, han ska till och med göra Salomos rike ännu större än vad ditt har varit!' Och kungen har sagt, där han ligger i sin säng:
48'Välsignad vare Herren, Israels Gud, som har utsett en av mina söner att sitta på min tron, medan jag ännu lever och får se det med egna ögon!'
49-50Då flydde Adonia och hans gäster i panik från festen. För att skydda sig från Salomo rusade Adonia in i Herrens tält och grep tag i hornen på altaret för att be om nåd.
51När Salomo fick höra detta,
52sa han: Om han uppför sig som det förväntas av honom kommer inget att hända, men annars måste han dö.
53Kung Salomo lät kalla Adonia till sig, och man hämtade honom från altaret. När han kom bugade han sig djupt för kungen, men Salomo avfärdade honom helt kort med orden: Ge dig iväg hem!
Davids råd till Salomo
2När kung David kände att slutet för hans del var nära, förmanade han sin son Salomo:
2Nu går jag snart dit varje människa på jorden måste gå en dag. Jag räknar med att du ska bli en värdig efterföljare.
3Lyd Guds lagar och vandra på hans vägar! Håll alla bud som är nedskrivna i Moses lag, så att du får framgång i allt vad du gör och vart du än vänder dig!
4Om du gör det, så ska Herren infria alla de löften han gav mig. Han sa att om mina barn och deras ättlingar ger akt på hur de vandrar och är trogna mot honom, så kommer alltid någon av dem att vara kung över Israel, och min kungaätt ska aldrig ta slut.
5Hör nu på vad jag säger! Du vet att Joab dödade mina två generaler Abner och Amasa. Han lät deras blod flyta som om de hade legat i krig med varandra.
6Du är en vis man och vet vad du bör göra, så låt honom inte dö i frid av hög ålder.
7Men var barmhärtig mot gileaditen Barsillais söner. Låt dem få vara ständiga gäster vid ditt bord, för de tog hand om mig när jag flydde från din bror Absalom.
8Och du kommer väl ihåg Simei, Geras son, benjaminiten från Bahurim? Han uttalade en fruktansvärd förbannelse över mig när jag var på väg till Mahanaim. När han sedan kom ner till mig vid Jordanfloden, lovade jag att inte döda honom.
9Men du är inte bunden vid det löftet! Du är en vis man och vet hur du ska göra. Visst är han gammal redan, men avsluta hans liv i förtid.
10Sedan dog David, och han begravdes i Jerusalem.
11Han hade regerat över Israel i fyrtio år, sju år i Hebron och trettiotre i Jerusalem.
12Salomo blev kung efter sin far David och satte sig på hans tron och hans makt ifrågasattes inte.
Salomo undanröjer oppositionen
13En dag kom Haggits son Adonia på besök till Salomos mor Bat-Seba. Har du kommit för att ge mig bekymmer? frågade hon honom. Nej, svarade han.
14Jag kommer faktiskt bara för att be om en tjänst.Säg vad du har på hjärtat! sa hon.
15Allting gick så bra för mig, och kungariket var mitt, sa Adonia. Alla väntade att jag skulle bli den nye kungen. Men så ändrades plötsligt allting, och min bror blev kung, för det var så Herren ville ha det.
16Nu har jag en bön till dig, och avvisa mig inte!Vad vill du? frågade hon.
17Be kung Salomo att han ger mig Abisag från Sunem till hustru, för dig visar han ju inte bort, svarade han.
18Det ska jag göra, lovade Bat-Seba.
19Kungen reste sig när hon kom in för att tala med honom om Adonias önskan. Han bugade sig för henne och gav order om att man skulle hämta en tron åt henne och placera den vid hans högra sida.
20Jag hoppas du inte visar bort mig, när jag nu kommer med en begäran till dig, sa hon.Vad gäller saken? frågade han. Du vet ju att jag inte kan vägra dig något.
21Låt då din bror Adonia få Abisag till hustru, svarade hon.
22Men vad menar du? frågade han bestört och fortsatte: Om jag skulle ge honom Abisag, som tillhörde min far, så vill han väl som min äldre bror ha riket nästa gång! Han och prästen Ebjatar och Joab skulle gärna ta över alltsammans!
23-24Kung Salomo lovade då under ed att låta Adonia få betala med livet för sin fräckhet: Jag svär vid den levande Guden, som har gett mig min far Davids tron och detta rike, att Adonia ska dö i dag.
25Sedan beordrade han Benaja att avrätta Adonia, och denne högg ner honom med sitt svärd.
26Till prästen Ebjatar sa kungen: Gå tillbaka till ditt hem i Anatot. Du förtjänar att dö, men jag vill inte avrätta dig nu. Du bar ju Herrens ark under min fars regering, och du fick lida med honom under alla hans svårigheter.
27Men Salomo tvingade Ebjatar att lämna sin ställning som Herrens präst, och på så sätt gick Herrens ord vid Silo beträffande Elis ättlingar i uppfyllelse.
28När Joab, som hade varit med i Adonias kupp men inte hade slutit sig till Absalom, fick höra att Adonia var död, skyndade han sig till tabernaklet och grep tag om altarets horn.
29Salomo skickade Benaja för att avrätta honom också.
30Benaja gick in i tabernaklet och sa till Joab: Kungen befaller dig att komma ut!Nej, jag vill dö här, svarade han.Benaja återvände då till kungen för att få vidare instruktioner.
31Gör som han vill, svarade kungen. Döda honom vid altaret och begrav honom. Det kommer att befria mig och min fars hus från skuld på grund av hans meningslösa mord.
32Herren kommer att hålla honom personligen ansvarig för att utan min fars vetskap ha dödat två oskyldiga män, som dessutom var mer rakryggade än han själv. Min far hade ingen del i morden på Abner, överbefälhavaren för Israels armé, och på Amasa, överbefälhavaren för Juda armé.
33Skulden för detta ska för alltid vila över Joab och hans efterkommande, men sin frid ska Herren ge till David och hans efterkommande, hans tron och hans hus!
34Benaja återvände till tabernaklet. Han dödade Joab, som sedan begravdes på sin egen mark i öknen.
35Sedan utsåg kungen Benaja till överbefälhavare och Sadok till präst i stället för Ebjatar.
36-37Kungen skickade därefter bud till Simei och lät säga: Bygg dig ett hus här i Jerusalem och stanna här. Om du lämnar staden så är du dödsdömd. Ja, i det ögonblick som du går över bäcken Kidron kommer du att dö. Valet är ditt!
38Jag ska göra som du säger, svarade Simei. Simei bodde sedan ganska länge i Jerusalem.
39Men tre år senare rymde två av hans slavar till kung Akis i Gat. När Simei fick reda på var de befann sig,
40sadlade han sin åsna för att fara till Gat och besöka kungen. När han hade fått tag i sina slavar, tog han dem med sig tillbaka till Jerusalem.
41När Salomo fick höra att Simei hade återvänt till Jerusalem efter ett besök i Gat,
42skickade han bud efter honom och sa: Befallde jag dig inte i Herrens namn att du skulle stanna i Jerusalem, och att du kunde lämna staden bara med livet som insats? Och vad svarade du? Jo, att du skulle göra som jag befallde.
43Varför har du då inte hållit vår överenskommelse?
44Tänk på allt ont som du gjorde mot min far, kung David! Herren ska hämnas på dig,
45men jag själv ska bli välsignad, och Davids ättlingar ska sitta på denna tron i all framtid!
46På kungens befallning ledde sedan Benaja ut Simei och dödade honom.Salomos grepp om kungariket blev allt fastare.
1Now king David was old and stricken in years; and they covered him with clothes, but he gat no heat.
2Wherefore his servants said unto him, Let there be sought for my lord the king a young virgin: and let her stand before the king, and let her cherish him, and let her lie in thy bosom, that my lord the king may get heat.
3So they sought for a fair damsel throughout all the coasts of Israel, and found Abishag a Shunammite, and brought her to the king.
4And the damsel was very fair, and cherished the king, and ministered to him: but the king knew her not.
5Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, I will be king: and he prepared him chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.
6And his father had not displeased him at any time in saying, Why hast thou done so? and he also was a very goodly man; and his mother bare him after Absalom.
7And he conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah, and with Abiathar the priest: and they following Adonijah helped him.
8But Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and Nathan the prophet, and Shimei, and Rei, and the mighty men which belonged to David, were not with Adonijah.
9And Adonijah slew sheep and oxen and fat cattle by the stone of Zoheleth, which is by Enrogel, and called all his brethren the king's sons, and all the men of Judah the king's servants:
10But Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah, and the mighty men, and Solomon his brother, he called not.
11Wherefore Nathan spake unto Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, saying, Hast thou not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith doth reign, and David our lord knoweth it not?
12Now therefore come, let me, I pray thee, give thee counsel, that thou mayest save thine own life, and the life of thy son Solomon.
13Go and get thee in unto king David, and say unto him, Didst not thou, my lord, O king, swear unto thine handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne? why then doth Adonijah reign?
14Behold, while thou yet talkest there with the king, I also will come in after thee, and confirm thy words.
15And Bathsheba went in unto the king into the chamber: and the king was very old; and Abishag the Shunammite ministered unto the king.
16And Bathsheba bowed, and did obeisance unto the king. And the king said, What wouldest thou?
17And she said unto him, My lord, thou swarest by the Lord thy God unto thine handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne.
18And now, behold, Adonijah reigneth; and now, my lord the king, thou knowest it not:
19And he hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the sons of the king, and Abiathar the priest, and Joab the captain of the host: but Solomon thy servant hath he not called.
20And thou, my lord, O king, the eyes of all Israel are upon thee, that thou shouldest tell them who shall sit on the throne of my lord the king after him.
21Otherwise it shall come to pass, when my lord the king shall sleep with his fathers, that I and my son Solomon shall be counted offenders.
22And, lo, while she yet talked with the king, Nathan the prophet also came in.
23And they told the king, saying, Behold Nathan the prophet. And when he was come in before the king, he bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground.
24And Nathan said, My lord, O king, hast thou said, Adonijah shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne?
25For he is gone down this day, and hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the king's sons, and the captains of the host, and Abiathar the priest; and, behold, they eat and drink before him, and say, God save king Adonijah.
26But me, even me thy servant, and Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and thy servant Solomon, hath he not called.
27Is this thing done by my lord the king, and thou hast not shewed it unto thy servant, who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?
28Then king David answered and said, Call me Bathsheba. And she came into the king's presence, and stood before the king.
29And the king sware, and said, As the Lord liveth, that hath redeemed my soul out of all distress,
30Even as I sware unto thee by the Lord God of Israel, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne in my stead; even so will I certainly do this day.
31Then Bathsheba bowed with her face to the earth, and did reverence to the king, and said, Let my lord king David live for ever.
32And king David said, Call me Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada. And they came before the king.
33The king also said unto them, Take with you the servants of your lord, and cause Solomon my son to ride upon mine own mule, and bring him down to Gihon:
34And let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him there king over Israel: and blow ye with the trumpet, and say, God save king Solomon.
35Then ye shall come up after him, that he may come and sit upon my throne; for he shall be king in my stead: and I have appointed him to be ruler over Israel and over Judah.
36And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada answered the king, and said, Amen: the Lord God of my lord the king say so too.
37As the Lord hath been with my lord the king, even so be he with Solomon, and make his throne greater than the throne of my lord king David.
38So Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, went down, and caused Solomon to ride upon king David's mule, and brought him to Gihon.
39And Zadok the priest took an horn of oil out of the tabernacle, and anointed Solomon. And they blew the trumpet; and all the people said, God save king Solomon.
40And all the people came up after him, and the people piped with pipes, and rejoiced with great joy, so that the earth rent with the sound of them.
41And Adonijah and all the guests that were with him heard it as they had made an end of eating. And when Joab heard the sound of the trumpet, he said, Wherefore is this noise of the city being in an uproar?
42And while he yet spake, behold, Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest came; and Adonijah said unto him, Come in; for thou art a valiant man, and bringest good tidings.
43And Jonathan answered and said to Adonijah, Verily our lord king David hath made Solomon king.
44And the king hath sent with him Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, and they have caused him to ride upon the king's mule:
45And Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king in Gihon: and they are come up from thence rejoicing, so that the city rang again. This is the noise that ye have heard.
46And also Solomon sitteth on the throne of the kingdom.
47And moreover the king's servants came to bless our lord king David, saying, God make the name of Solomon better than thy name, and make his throne greater than thy throne. And the king bowed himself upon the bed.
48And also thus said the king, Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, which hath given one to sit on my throne this day, mine eyes even seeing it.
49And all the guests that were with Adonijah were afraid, and rose up, and went every man his way.
50And Adonijah feared because of Solomon, and arose, and went, and caught hold on the horns of the altar.
51And it was told Solomon, saying, Behold, Adonijah feareth king Solomon: for, lo, he hath caught hold on the horns of the altar, saying, Let king Solomon swear unto me today that he will not slay his servant with the sword.
52And Solomon said, If he will shew himself a worthy man, there shall not an hair of him fall to the earth: but if wickedness shall be found in him, he shall die.
53So king Solomon sent, and they brought him down from the altar. And he came and bowed himself to king Solomon: and Solomon said unto him, Go to thine house.
2Now the days of David drew nigh that he should die; and he charged Solomon his son, saying,
2I go the way of all the earth: be thou strong therefore, and shew thyself a man;
3And keep the charge of the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, and whithersoever thou turnest thyself:
4That the Lord may continue his word which he spake concerning me, saying, If thy children take heed to their way, to walk before me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul, there shall not fail thee (said he) a man on the throne of Israel.
5Moreover thou knowest also what Joab the son of Zeruiah did to me, and what he did to the two captains of the hosts of Israel, unto Abner the son of Ner, and unto Amasa the son of Jether, whom he slew, and shed the blood of war in peace, and put the blood of war upon his girdle that was about his loins, and in his shoes that were on his feet.
6Do therefore according to thy wisdom, and let not his hoar head go down to the grave in peace.
7But shew kindness unto the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be of those that eat at thy table: for so they came to me when I fled because of Absalom thy brother.
8And, behold, thou hast with thee Shimei the son of Gera, a Benjamite of Bahurim, which cursed me with a grievous curse in the day when I went to Mahanaim: but he came down to meet me at Jordan, and I sware to him by the Lord, saying, I will not put thee to death with the sword.
9Now therefore hold him not guiltless: for thou art a wise man, and knowest what thou oughtest to do unto him; but his hoar head bring thou down to the grave with blood.
10So David slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David.
11And the days that David reigned over Israel were forty years: seven years reigned he in Hebron, and thirty and three years reigned he in Jerusalem.
12Then sat Solomon upon the throne of David his father; and his kingdom was established greatly.
13And Adonijah the son of Haggith came to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon. And she said, Comest thou peaceably? And he said, Peaceably.
14He said moreover, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And she said, Say on.
15And he said, Thou knowest that the kingdom was mine, and that all Israel set their faces on me, that I should reign: howbeit the kingdom is turned about, and is become my brother's: for it was his from the Lord.
16And now I ask one petition of thee, deny me not. And she said unto him, Say on.
17And he said, Speak, I pray thee, unto Solomon the king, (for he will not say thee nay,) that he give me Abishag the Shunammite to wife.
18And Bathsheba said, Well; I will speak for thee unto the king.
19Bathsheba therefore went unto king Solomon, to speak unto him for Adonijah. And the king rose up to meet her, and bowed himself unto her, and sat down on his throne, and caused a seat to be set for the king's mother; and she sat on his right hand.
20Then she said, I desire one small petition of thee; I pray thee, say me not nay. And the king said unto her, Ask on, my mother: for I will not say thee nay.
21And she said, Let Abishag the Shunammite be given to Adonijah thy brother to wife.
22And king Solomon answered and said unto his mother, And why dost thou ask Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? ask for him the kingdom also; for he is mine elder brother; even for him, and for Abiathar the priest, and for Joab the son of Zeruiah.
23Then king Solomon sware by the Lord, saying, God do so to me, and more also, if Adonijah have not spoken this word against his own life.
24Now therefore, as the Lord liveth, which hath established me, and set me on the throne of David my father, and who hath made me an house, as he promised, Adonijah shall be put to death this day.
25And king Solomon sent by the hand of Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; and he fell upon him that he died.
26And unto Abiathar the priest said the king, Get thee to Anathoth, unto thine own fields; for thou art worthy of death: but I will not at this time put thee to death, because thou barest the ark of the Lord God before David my father, and because thou hast been afflicted in all wherein my father was afflicted.
27So Solomon thrust out Abiathar from being priest unto the Lord; that he might fulfil the word of the Lord, which he spake concerning the house of Eli in Shiloh.
28Then tidings came to Joab: for Joab had turned after Adonijah, though he turned not after Absalom. And Joab fled unto the tabernacle of the Lord, and caught hold on the horns of the altar.
29And it was told king Solomon that Joab was fled unto the tabernacle of the Lord; and, behold, he is by the altar. Then Solomon sent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, saying, Go, fall upon him.
30And Benaiah came to the tabernacle of the Lord, and said unto him, Thus saith the king, Come forth. And he said, Nay; but I will die here. And Benaiah brought the king word again, saying, Thus said Joab, and thus he answered me.
31And the king said unto him, Do as he hath said, and fall upon him, and bury him; that thou mayest take away the innocent blood, which Joab shed, from me, and from the house of my father.
32And the Lord shall return his blood upon his own head, who fell upon two men more righteous and better than he, and slew them with the sword, my father David not knowing thereof, to wit, Abner the son of Ner, captain of the host of Israel, and Amasa the son of Jether, captain of the host of Judah.
33Their blood shall therefore return upon the head of Joab, and upon the head of his seed for ever: but upon David, and upon his seed, and upon his house, and upon his throne, shall there be peace for ever from the Lord.
34So Benaiah the son of Jehoiada went up, and fell upon him, and slew him: and he was buried in his own house in the wilderness.
35And the king put Benaiah the son of Jehoiada in his room over the host: and Zadok the priest did the king put in the room of Abiathar.
36And the king sent and called for Shimei, and said unto him, Build thee an house in Jerusalem, and dwell there, and go not forth thence any whither.
37For it shall be, that on the day thou goest out, and passest over the brook Kidron, thou shalt know for certain that thou shalt surely die: thy blood shall be upon thine own head.
38And Shimei said unto the king, The saying is good: as my lord the king hath said, so will thy servant do. And Shimei dwelt in Jerusalem many days.
39And it came to pass at the end of three years, that two of the servants of Shimei ran away unto Achish son of Maachah king of Gath. And they told Shimei, saying, Behold, thy servants be in Gath.
40And Shimei arose, and saddled his ass, and went to Gath to Achish to seek his servants: and Shimei went, and brought his servants from Gath.
41And it was told Solomon that Shimei had gone from Jerusalem to Gath, and was come again.
42And the king sent and called for Shimei, and said unto him, Did I not make thee to swear by the Lord, and protested unto thee, saying, Know for a certain, on the day thou goest out, and walkest abroad any whither, that thou shalt surely die? and thou saidst unto me, The word that I have heard is good.
43Why then hast thou not kept the oath of the Lord, and the commandment that I have charged thee with?
44The king said moreover to Shimei, Thou knowest all the wickedness which thine heart is privy to, that thou didst to David my father: therefore the Lord shall return thy wickedness upon thine own head;
45And king Solomon shall be blessed, and the throne of David shall be established before the Lord for ever.
46So the king commanded Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; which went out, and fell upon him, that he died. And the kingdom was established in the hand of Solomon.
Adonia försöker ta makten
1-2När kung David var gammal var han frusen av sig och blev inte varm hur många filtar man än bredde över honom.

6Hans far hade aldrig velat gå till rätta med honom och fråga vad han menade med detta. Adonia såg mycket bra ut, och han var Absaloms yngre bror.
7Han fick med sig Joab, överbefälhavaren, och prästen Ebjatar, och de lovade att hjälpa honom till makten.
8Men bland dem som fortsatte att vara trogna mot kung David och vägrade acceptera Adonia fanns prästen Sadok och Benaja, Jojadas son, profeten Natan, Simei, Rei och Davids hjältar.
9Adonia begav sig till Rogelskällan, där han offrade får, tjurar och gödkalvar vid Soheletstenen. Därefter kallade han samman alla sina bröder, kungens söner och alla de män i Juda som var i kungens tjänst.
10Men han inbjöd inte profeten Natan, Benaja, Davids hjältar och sin bror Salomo.
11Då gick profeten Natan till Salomos mor, Bat-Seba, och frågade henne: Känner du till att Haggits son Adonia nu är kung och att vår herre David inte ens vet om det?
12Om du vill rädda ditt eget och din son Salomos liv, så ska du göra det jag säger till dig!
13Du ska genast gå till kung David och fråga honom: 'Min herre, har du inte lovat mig att min son Salomo ska bli kung efter dig och sitta på din tron? Hur kan det då komma sig att Adonia regerar nu?'
14Medan du talar med honom ska jag komma in och bekräfta allt du säger.
15Bat-Seba gick till den gamle kungen i hans rum där Abisag skötte om honom.
16Bat-Seba bugade sig djupt för honom och böjde knä. David frågade henne: Vad har du på hjärtat?
17Min herre och kung, svarade hon. Du svor inför Herren, din Gud, och lovade mig att min son Salomo skulle efterträda dig på tronen,
18men nu har Adonia blivit kung i stället utan att du ens vet om det!
19Han har firat sin kröning genom att offra oxar, gödkalvar och en mängd får, och han har inbjudit alla dina söner och prästen Ebjatar och Joab, överbefälhavaren, men inte Salomo.
20Nu vill hela Israel veta om du verkligen har utsett Adonia till din efterträdare.
21Om du inte gör någonting åt detta så kommer min son Salomo och jag att avrättas som brottslingar så snart du är borta.
22-23Medan hon fortfarande talade med kungen kom profeten Natan. Man meddelade kungen detta och han lät honom komma in i rummet. Natan bugade sig djupt för kungen
24och frågade: Herre, har du utsett Adonia att bli kung efter dig?
25I dag firar han sin kröning genom att offra tjurar, gödkalvar och får, och han har inbjudit dina söner till festligheterna, prästen Ebjatar och dina bästa män. De äter och dricker tillsammans med honom och ropar: 'Länge leve kung Adonia!'
26Men prästen Sadok och Benaja och Salomo och mig har han inte bjudit.
27Har detta skett med din vetskap? Man kan ju tro det, eftersom du inte har sagt ett ord om vilken av dina söner som du har valt att bli kung efter dig.
David väljer Salomo till tronföljare
28Kalla tillbaka Bat-Seba! sa David.Bat-Seba kom omedelbart och gick fram till kungen igen.
29Kung David gav då ett löfte under ed: Så sant Herren lever, han som har räddat mig från alla faror,
30lovar jag att din son Salomo ska bli kung och sitta på min tron, precis som jag tidigare sagt under ed inför Herren, Israels Gud.
31Då bugade sig Bat-Seba djupt inför honom och utropade: Tack, min herre och kung. Må du leva i evighet!
32Kalla hit prästen Sadok, profeten Natan och Benaja, Jojadas son, befallde kungen.När de kom,
33sa han till dem: Ta med er mina män och för Salomo till Gihon. Han ska rida på min egen mulåsna.
34I Gihon ska du Sadok och du Natan smörja honom till kung över Israel. Sedan ska ni blåsa i trumpeterna och ropa: 'Länge leve kung Salomo!'
35För honom sedan tillbaka hit och sätt honom på min tron som den nye kungen, för jag har utsett honom att härska över Israel och Juda.
36Amen! Må det bli så! svarade Benaja och tillade:
37Herren ska vara med Salomo, på samma sätt som han har varit med dig, och hans rike ska bli ännu mäktigare än ditt!
38Prästen Sadok, profeten Natan och Benaja med kung Davids livvakt tog alltså med sig Salomo till Gihon, och han red på kung Davids egen mulåsna.
39Sadok tog hornet med helig olja från tabernaklet och hällde över Salomo. Man blåste i trumpet, och allt folket ropade: Länge leve kung Salomo!
40Sedan återvände de alla till Jerusalem under musik och jubelrop så att marken skakade.
41Adonia och hans gäster hörde också all uppståndelse, just som de skulle avsluta sin fest.Vad är det som pågår? Varför är hela staden i uppror? frågade Joab när han hörde trumpetsignalerna.
42Innan han hunnit säga mer kom prästen Ebjatars son Jonatan inrusande.Kom hit, sa Adonia. En man som du kommer säkert med goda nyheter.
43Nej, tyvärr inte, ropade Jonatan. David har utropat Salomo till kung!
44-45Han har sänt honom till Gihon tillsammans med prästen Sadok och profeten Natan och Benaja, under beskydd av kungens egen livvakt, och Salomo red på kungens egen mulåsna. Sadok och Natan har smort honom till kung där! Nu har de just kommit tillbaka, och hela staden firar det. Det är därför det är ett sådant oväsen.
46-47Salomo sitter redan på tronen, och de styrande gratulerar David och säger: 'Gud ska välsigna dig mer genom Salomo än han har välsignat dig personligen! Ja, han ska till och med göra Salomos rike ännu större än vad ditt har varit!' Och kungen har sagt, där han ligger i sin säng:
48'Välsignad vare Herren, Israels Gud, som har utsett en av mina söner att sitta på min tron, medan jag ännu lever och får se det med egna ögon!'
49-50Då flydde Adonia och hans gäster i panik från festen. För att skydda sig från Salomo rusade Adonia in i Herrens tält och grep tag i hornen på altaret för att be om nåd.
51När Salomo fick höra detta,
52sa han: Om han uppför sig som det förväntas av honom kommer inget att hända, men annars måste han dö.
53Kung Salomo lät kalla Adonia till sig, och man hämtade honom från altaret. När han kom bugade han sig djupt för kungen, men Salomo avfärdade honom helt kort med orden: Ge dig iväg hem!
Davids råd till Salomo
2När kung David kände att slutet för hans del var nära, förmanade han sin son Salomo:
2Nu går jag snart dit varje människa på jorden måste gå en dag. Jag räknar med att du ska bli en värdig efterföljare.
3Lyd Guds lagar och vandra på hans vägar! Håll alla bud som är nedskrivna i Moses lag, så att du får framgång i allt vad du gör och vart du än vänder dig!
4Om du gör det, så ska Herren infria alla de löften han gav mig. Han sa att om mina barn och deras ättlingar ger akt på hur de vandrar och är trogna mot honom, så kommer alltid någon av dem att vara kung över Israel, och min kungaätt ska aldrig ta slut.
5Hör nu på vad jag säger! Du vet att Joab dödade mina två generaler Abner och Amasa. Han lät deras blod flyta som om de hade legat i krig med varandra.
6Du är en vis man och vet vad du bör göra, så låt honom inte dö i frid av hög ålder.
7Men var barmhärtig mot gileaditen Barsillais söner. Låt dem få vara ständiga gäster vid ditt bord, för de tog hand om mig när jag flydde från din bror Absalom.
8Och du kommer väl ihåg Simei, Geras son, benjaminiten från Bahurim? Han uttalade en fruktansvärd förbannelse över mig när jag var på väg till Mahanaim. När han sedan kom ner till mig vid Jordanfloden, lovade jag att inte döda honom.
9Men du är inte bunden vid det löftet! Du är en vis man och vet hur du ska göra. Visst är han gammal redan, men avsluta hans liv i förtid.
10Sedan dog David, och han begravdes i Jerusalem.
11Han hade regerat över Israel i fyrtio år, sju år i Hebron och trettiotre i Jerusalem.
12Salomo blev kung efter sin far David och satte sig på hans tron och hans makt ifrågasattes inte.
Salomo undanröjer oppositionen
13En dag kom Haggits son Adonia på besök till Salomos mor Bat-Seba. Har du kommit för att ge mig bekymmer? frågade hon honom. Nej, svarade han.
14Jag kommer faktiskt bara för att be om en tjänst.Säg vad du har på hjärtat! sa hon.
15Allting gick så bra för mig, och kungariket var mitt, sa Adonia. Alla väntade att jag skulle bli den nye kungen. Men så ändrades plötsligt allting, och min bror blev kung, för det var så Herren ville ha det.
16Nu har jag en bön till dig, och avvisa mig inte!Vad vill du? frågade hon.
17Be kung Salomo att han ger mig Abisag från Sunem till hustru, för dig visar han ju inte bort, svarade han.
18Det ska jag göra, lovade Bat-Seba.
19Kungen reste sig när hon kom in för att tala med honom om Adonias önskan. Han bugade sig för henne och gav order om att man skulle hämta en tron åt henne och placera den vid hans högra sida.
20Jag hoppas du inte visar bort mig, när jag nu kommer med en begäran till dig, sa hon.Vad gäller saken? frågade han. Du vet ju att jag inte kan vägra dig något.
21Låt då din bror Adonia få Abisag till hustru, svarade hon.
22Men vad menar du? frågade han bestört och fortsatte: Om jag skulle ge honom Abisag, som tillhörde min far, så vill han väl som min äldre bror ha riket nästa gång! Han och prästen Ebjatar och Joab skulle gärna ta över alltsammans!
23-24Kung Salomo lovade då under ed att låta Adonia få betala med livet för sin fräckhet: Jag svär vid den levande Guden, som har gett mig min far Davids tron och detta rike, att Adonia ska dö i dag.
25Sedan beordrade han Benaja att avrätta Adonia, och denne högg ner honom med sitt svärd.
26Till prästen Ebjatar sa kungen: Gå tillbaka till ditt hem i Anatot. Du förtjänar att dö, men jag vill inte avrätta dig nu. Du bar ju Herrens ark under min fars regering, och du fick lida med honom under alla hans svårigheter.
27Men Salomo tvingade Ebjatar att lämna sin ställning som Herrens präst, och på så sätt gick Herrens ord vid Silo beträffande Elis ättlingar i uppfyllelse.
28När Joab, som hade varit med i Adonias kupp men inte hade slutit sig till Absalom, fick höra att Adonia var död, skyndade han sig till tabernaklet och grep tag om altarets horn.
29Salomo skickade Benaja för att avrätta honom också.
30Benaja gick in i tabernaklet och sa till Joab: Kungen befaller dig att komma ut!Nej, jag vill dö här, svarade han.Benaja återvände då till kungen för att få vidare instruktioner.
31Gör som han vill, svarade kungen. Döda honom vid altaret och begrav honom. Det kommer att befria mig och min fars hus från skuld på grund av hans meningslösa mord.
32Herren kommer att hålla honom personligen ansvarig för att utan min fars vetskap ha dödat två oskyldiga män, som dessutom var mer rakryggade än han själv. Min far hade ingen del i morden på Abner, överbefälhavaren för Israels armé, och på Amasa, överbefälhavaren för Juda armé.
33Skulden för detta ska för alltid vila över Joab och hans efterkommande, men sin frid ska Herren ge till David och hans efterkommande, hans tron och hans hus!
34Benaja återvände till tabernaklet. Han dödade Joab, som sedan begravdes på sin egen mark i öknen.
35Sedan utsåg kungen Benaja till överbefälhavare och Sadok till präst i stället för Ebjatar.
36-37Kungen skickade därefter bud till Simei och lät säga: Bygg dig ett hus här i Jerusalem och stanna här. Om du lämnar staden så är du dödsdömd. Ja, i det ögonblick som du går över bäcken Kidron kommer du att dö. Valet är ditt!
38Jag ska göra som du säger, svarade Simei. Simei bodde sedan ganska länge i Jerusalem.
39Men tre år senare rymde två av hans slavar till kung Akis i Gat. När Simei fick reda på var de befann sig,
40sadlade han sin åsna för att fara till Gat och besöka kungen. När han hade fått tag i sina slavar, tog han dem med sig tillbaka till Jerusalem.
41När Salomo fick höra att Simei hade återvänt till Jerusalem efter ett besök i Gat,
42skickade han bud efter honom och sa: Befallde jag dig inte i Herrens namn att du skulle stanna i Jerusalem, och att du kunde lämna staden bara med livet som insats? Och vad svarade du? Jo, att du skulle göra som jag befallde.
43Varför har du då inte hållit vår överenskommelse?
44Tänk på allt ont som du gjorde mot min far, kung David! Herren ska hämnas på dig,
45men jag själv ska bli välsignad, och Davids ättlingar ska sitta på denna tron i all framtid!
46På kungens befallning ledde sedan Benaja ut Simei och dödade honom.Salomos grepp om kungariket blev allt fastare.
1Now king David was old and stricken in years; and they covered him with clothes, but he gat no heat.
2Wherefore his servants said unto him, Let there be sought for my lord the king a young virgin: and let her stand before the king, and let her cherish him, and let her lie in thy bosom, that my lord the king may get heat.
3So they sought for a fair damsel throughout all the coasts of Israel, and found Abishag a Shunammite, and brought her to the king.
4And the damsel was very fair, and cherished the king, and ministered to him: but the king knew her not.
5Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, I will be king: and he prepared him chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.
6And his father had not displeased him at any time in saying, Why hast thou done so? and he also was a very goodly man; and his mother bare him after Absalom.
7And he conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah, and with Abiathar the priest: and they following Adonijah helped him.
8But Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and Nathan the prophet, and Shimei, and Rei, and the mighty men which belonged to David, were not with Adonijah.
9And Adonijah slew sheep and oxen and fat cattle by the stone of Zoheleth, which is by Enrogel, and called all his brethren the king's sons, and all the men of Judah the king's servants:
10But Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah, and the mighty men, and Solomon his brother, he called not.
11Wherefore Nathan spake unto Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, saying, Hast thou not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith doth reign, and David our lord knoweth it not?
12Now therefore come, let me, I pray thee, give thee counsel, that thou mayest save thine own life, and the life of thy son Solomon.
13Go and get thee in unto king David, and say unto him, Didst not thou, my lord, O king, swear unto thine handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne? why then doth Adonijah reign?
14Behold, while thou yet talkest there with the king, I also will come in after thee, and confirm thy words.
15And Bathsheba went in unto the king into the chamber: and the king was very old; and Abishag the Shunammite ministered unto the king.
16And Bathsheba bowed, and did obeisance unto the king. And the king said, What wouldest thou?
17And she said unto him, My lord, thou swarest by the Lord thy God unto thine handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne.
18And now, behold, Adonijah reigneth; and now, my lord the king, thou knowest it not:
19And he hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the sons of the king, and Abiathar the priest, and Joab the captain of the host: but Solomon thy servant hath he not called.
20And thou, my lord, O king, the eyes of all Israel are upon thee, that thou shouldest tell them who shall sit on the throne of my lord the king after him.
21Otherwise it shall come to pass, when my lord the king shall sleep with his fathers, that I and my son Solomon shall be counted offenders.
22And, lo, while she yet talked with the king, Nathan the prophet also came in.
23And they told the king, saying, Behold Nathan the prophet. And when he was come in before the king, he bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground.
24And Nathan said, My lord, O king, hast thou said, Adonijah shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne?
25For he is gone down this day, and hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the king's sons, and the captains of the host, and Abiathar the priest; and, behold, they eat and drink before him, and say, God save king Adonijah.
26But me, even me thy servant, and Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and thy servant Solomon, hath he not called.
27Is this thing done by my lord the king, and thou hast not shewed it unto thy servant, who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?
28Then king David answered and said, Call me Bathsheba. And she came into the king's presence, and stood before the king.
29And the king sware, and said, As the Lord liveth, that hath redeemed my soul out of all distress,
30Even as I sware unto thee by the Lord God of Israel, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne in my stead; even so will I certainly do this day.
31Then Bathsheba bowed with her face to the earth, and did reverence to the king, and said, Let my lord king David live for ever.
32And king David said, Call me Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada. And they came before the king.
33The king also said unto them, Take with you the servants of your lord, and cause Solomon my son to ride upon mine own mule, and bring him down to Gihon:
34And let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him there king over Israel: and blow ye with the trumpet, and say, God save king Solomon.
35Then ye shall come up after him, that he may come and sit upon my throne; for he shall be king in my stead: and I have appointed him to be ruler over Israel and over Judah.
36And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada answered the king, and said, Amen: the Lord God of my lord the king say so too.
37As the Lord hath been with my lord the king, even so be he with Solomon, and make his throne greater than the throne of my lord king David.
38So Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, went down, and caused Solomon to ride upon king David's mule, and brought him to Gihon.
39And Zadok the priest took an horn of oil out of the tabernacle, and anointed Solomon. And they blew the trumpet; and all the people said, God save king Solomon.
40And all the people came up after him, and the people piped with pipes, and rejoiced with great joy, so that the earth rent with the sound of them.
41And Adonijah and all the guests that were with him heard it as they had made an end of eating. And when Joab heard the sound of the trumpet, he said, Wherefore is this noise of the city being in an uproar?
42And while he yet spake, behold, Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest came; and Adonijah said unto him, Come in; for thou art a valiant man, and bringest good tidings.
43And Jonathan answered and said to Adonijah, Verily our lord king David hath made Solomon king.
44And the king hath sent with him Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, and they have caused him to ride upon the king's mule:
45And Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king in Gihon: and they are come up from thence rejoicing, so that the city rang again. This is the noise that ye have heard.
46And also Solomon sitteth on the throne of the kingdom.
47And moreover the king's servants came to bless our lord king David, saying, God make the name of Solomon better than thy name, and make his throne greater than thy throne. And the king bowed himself upon the bed.
48And also thus said the king, Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, which hath given one to sit on my throne this day, mine eyes even seeing it.
49And all the guests that were with Adonijah were afraid, and rose up, and went every man his way.
50And Adonijah feared because of Solomon, and arose, and went, and caught hold on the horns of the altar.
51And it was told Solomon, saying, Behold, Adonijah feareth king Solomon: for, lo, he hath caught hold on the horns of the altar, saying, Let king Solomon swear unto me today that he will not slay his servant with the sword.
52And Solomon said, If he will shew himself a worthy man, there shall not an hair of him fall to the earth: but if wickedness shall be found in him, he shall die.
53So king Solomon sent, and they brought him down from the altar. And he came and bowed himself to king Solomon: and Solomon said unto him, Go to thine house.
2Now the days of David drew nigh that he should die; and he charged Solomon his son, saying,
2I go the way of all the earth: be thou strong therefore, and shew thyself a man;
3And keep the charge of the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, and whithersoever thou turnest thyself:
4That the Lord may continue his word which he spake concerning me, saying, If thy children take heed to their way, to walk before me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul, there shall not fail thee (said he) a man on the throne of Israel.
5Moreover thou knowest also what Joab the son of Zeruiah did to me, and what he did to the two captains of the hosts of Israel, unto Abner the son of Ner, and unto Amasa the son of Jether, whom he slew, and shed the blood of war in peace, and put the blood of war upon his girdle that was about his loins, and in his shoes that were on his feet.
6Do therefore according to thy wisdom, and let not his hoar head go down to the grave in peace.
7But shew kindness unto the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be of those that eat at thy table: for so they came to me when I fled because of Absalom thy brother.
8And, behold, thou hast with thee Shimei the son of Gera, a Benjamite of Bahurim, which cursed me with a grievous curse in the day when I went to Mahanaim: but he came down to meet me at Jordan, and I sware to him by the Lord, saying, I will not put thee to death with the sword.
9Now therefore hold him not guiltless: for thou art a wise man, and knowest what thou oughtest to do unto him; but his hoar head bring thou down to the grave with blood.
10So David slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David.
11And the days that David reigned over Israel were forty years: seven years reigned he in Hebron, and thirty and three years reigned he in Jerusalem.
12Then sat Solomon upon the throne of David his father; and his kingdom was established greatly.
13And Adonijah the son of Haggith came to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon. And she said, Comest thou peaceably? And he said, Peaceably.
14He said moreover, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And she said, Say on.
15And he said, Thou knowest that the kingdom was mine, and that all Israel set their faces on me, that I should reign: howbeit the kingdom is turned about, and is become my brother's: for it was his from the Lord.
16And now I ask one petition of thee, deny me not. And she said unto him, Say on.
17And he said, Speak, I pray thee, unto Solomon the king, (for he will not say thee nay,) that he give me Abishag the Shunammite to wife.
18And Bathsheba said, Well; I will speak for thee unto the king.
19Bathsheba therefore went unto king Solomon, to speak unto him for Adonijah. And the king rose up to meet her, and bowed himself unto her, and sat down on his throne, and caused a seat to be set for the king's mother; and she sat on his right hand.
20Then she said, I desire one small petition of thee; I pray thee, say me not nay. And the king said unto her, Ask on, my mother: for I will not say thee nay.
21And she said, Let Abishag the Shunammite be given to Adonijah thy brother to wife.
22And king Solomon answered and said unto his mother, And why dost thou ask Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? ask for him the kingdom also; for he is mine elder brother; even for him, and for Abiathar the priest, and for Joab the son of Zeruiah.
23Then king Solomon sware by the Lord, saying, God do so to me, and more also, if Adonijah have not spoken this word against his own life.
24Now therefore, as the Lord liveth, which hath established me, and set me on the throne of David my father, and who hath made me an house, as he promised, Adonijah shall be put to death this day.
25And king Solomon sent by the hand of Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; and he fell upon him that he died.
26And unto Abiathar the priest said the king, Get thee to Anathoth, unto thine own fields; for thou art worthy of death: but I will not at this time put thee to death, because thou barest the ark of the Lord God before David my father, and because thou hast been afflicted in all wherein my father was afflicted.
27So Solomon thrust out Abiathar from being priest unto the Lord; that he might fulfil the word of the Lord, which he spake concerning the house of Eli in Shiloh.
28Then tidings came to Joab: for Joab had turned after Adonijah, though he turned not after Absalom. And Joab fled unto the tabernacle of the Lord, and caught hold on the horns of the altar.
29And it was told king Solomon that Joab was fled unto the tabernacle of the Lord; and, behold, he is by the altar. Then Solomon sent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, saying, Go, fall upon him.
30And Benaiah came to the tabernacle of the Lord, and said unto him, Thus saith the king, Come forth. And he said, Nay; but I will die here. And Benaiah brought the king word again, saying, Thus said Joab, and thus he answered me.
31And the king said unto him, Do as he hath said, and fall upon him, and bury him; that thou mayest take away the innocent blood, which Joab shed, from me, and from the house of my father.
32And the Lord shall return his blood upon his own head, who fell upon two men more righteous and better than he, and slew them with the sword, my father David not knowing thereof, to wit, Abner the son of Ner, captain of the host of Israel, and Amasa the son of Jether, captain of the host of Judah.
33Their blood shall therefore return upon the head of Joab, and upon the head of his seed for ever: but upon David, and upon his seed, and upon his house, and upon his throne, shall there be peace for ever from the Lord.
34So Benaiah the son of Jehoiada went up, and fell upon him, and slew him: and he was buried in his own house in the wilderness.
35And the king put Benaiah the son of Jehoiada in his room over the host: and Zadok the priest did the king put in the room of Abiathar.
36And the king sent and called for Shimei, and said unto him, Build thee an house in Jerusalem, and dwell there, and go not forth thence any whither.
37For it shall be, that on the day thou goest out, and passest over the brook Kidron, thou shalt know for certain that thou shalt surely die: thy blood shall be upon thine own head.
38And Shimei said unto the king, The saying is good: as my lord the king hath said, so will thy servant do. And Shimei dwelt in Jerusalem many days.
39And it came to pass at the end of three years, that two of the servants of Shimei ran away unto Achish son of Maachah king of Gath. And they told Shimei, saying, Behold, thy servants be in Gath.
40And Shimei arose, and saddled his ass, and went to Gath to Achish to seek his servants: and Shimei went, and brought his servants from Gath.
41And it was told Solomon that Shimei had gone from Jerusalem to Gath, and was come again.
42And the king sent and called for Shimei, and said unto him, Did I not make thee to swear by the Lord, and protested unto thee, saying, Know for a certain, on the day thou goest out, and walkest abroad any whither, that thou shalt surely die? and thou saidst unto me, The word that I have heard is good.
43Why then hast thou not kept the oath of the Lord, and the commandment that I have charged thee with?
44The king said moreover to Shimei, Thou knowest all the wickedness which thine heart is privy to, that thou didst to David my father: therefore the Lord shall return thy wickedness upon thine own head;
45And king Solomon shall be blessed, and the throne of David shall be established before the Lord for ever.
46So the king commanded Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; which went out, and fell upon him, that he died. And the kingdom was established in the hand of Solomon.
