How does a poker odds calculator work? ›

A poker odds calculator calculates a player's winning ratio. Winning ratio is defined as, the number of games won divided by the total number of games simulated in a Monte Carlo simulation for a specific player.

Although aces form a winning hand 80% of the time, they are prone to losing against better hands. Two pairs will take the pot 31% of the time, while a simple pair will win the game 27% of the time. Three of a kind will win 12% of games, and a straight will win on average 9% of the time.

Rather than using a formula, poker players use the rule of 4 and 2. The rule says that if you have two cards to come (i.e. on the flop), you can multiply the number of outs you have by four and you'll come to an approximate percentage of making your hand.
