Lake Huron was originally called La Mer Douce, or “the freshwater sea,” by French explorers. It later got its name from the Huron people who lived along its shores. The St. Clair River begins in Port Huron at the southern end of Lake Huron and flows 44 miles south to meet the freshwater delta of Harsens Island in Lake St. Clair.

The first bridge was fully opened to traffic on October 10, 1938. The lead engineer was Polish-born Ralph Modjeski. This bridge originally had two lanes for vehicles as well as sidewalks.
