This is THE issue of our times. I’ve been through this myself and know the toll it takes on every level. And if you are not directly involved, from a systems approach I guarantee you are not going unscathed. For example, this affects predominantly women, if you have any women in your organization of or approaching informal care giving responsibilities, your bottom line is going to take a hit. And the systems aspect is inescapable. For example, I work as a nurse (one of my jobs), we have a female MA (medical assistant) on our team who is constantly having to call in or leave work due to the nature of caring for older parents. She was out yesterday and it made things challenging to say the least. Every time she does we are short staffed and the ripple effects are devastating for staff and patients getting less than optimal coverage. More people are impacted in a negative manner than may first meet the eye. This reverberates through the entire system and ultimately revenue generation in terms of perceived quality of care, corporate reputation, burned out coworkers and high employee turnover. This needs to be addressed with workable solutions, because if it’s left to free fall it will be costly to stakeholders.
